The Timeless Art of Moroccan Copper and Brass: Inside the Metalwork of Fez

The Timeless Art of Moroccan Copper and Brass: Inside the Metalwork of Fez

There is a sound that has echoed through the narrow alleys of Fez for centuries. It is the rhythmic, patient strike of hammer on metal.

In an age of mass production, where objects are made in factories and forgotten within seasons, the metalworkers of Fez still do something rare: they make things that last for generations.

A Craft With Centuries of History

The medina of Fez, founded in the 9th century, is home to one of the best-known coppersmithing quarters in the Arab world. Around Place Seffarine, artisans still work with techniques passed down through families. The tools have barely changed.

Each piece begins as a flat sheet of solid metal, red copper or brass (yellow copper). The artisan cuts it, hammers it into shape and then engraves it by hand, line after line. A large engraved tray or a full bathroom set takes many hours of work.

There are no shortcuts in the engraving. There is only the artisan, the metal, and time.

Why Solid Copper and Brass Are Different

Unlike thin coatings over cheap metal that chip and peel within a few years, solid copper and brass develop a patina, a warm tone that deepens with age, or can be polished back to a bright shine. Many Moroccan teapots and trays are solid brass with a silver finish, the traditional way to make them.

This is why copper and brass have been the materials of Moroccan hospitality for centuries. When a family serves tea on a hand-engraved tray, they are presenting a statement: we value craft, beauty and tradition.

The Cuivra Difference: From Atelier to Your Home

At Cuivra, every piece is made by our partner atelier in Fez, with more than 20 artisans, many of whom have practiced the craft for decades. We work with them directly.

Because every piece is hammered and engraved by hand, no two are exactly alike. Each product page states the metal, red copper or brass, and the finish, natural, gold or silver.

Styling Moroccan Copper and Brass in a Modern Home

These pieces were born in traditional Moroccan riads, but they work beautifully in contemporary spaces.

In a minimalist bathroom, engraved brass accessories like the Signature bathroom set create an instant focal point against white marble or concrete.

In a dining room, a large engraved serving tray becomes a centerpiece, displayed on a wall, placed on a console or used during gatherings.

In a kitchen, red copper pots like Kanz bring warmth to neutral palettes. They pair naturally with wood, stone and linen.

An Investment, Not a Purchase

A handmade copper or brass piece is not a decorative impulse. With basic care, it can outlast trends and seasons. See our care guide.
