From Fez to Your Home: The Story Behind a Cuivra Piece

A look at what actually goes into a handmade Cuivra piece, no exaggerated claims, just the process.

Every Cuivra piece starts the same way: a sheet of brass or red copper, an artisan's hands, and a design passed down through generations of Moroccan metalwork tradition.

We wanted to write something simple and honest about what "handcrafted in Fez" actually means, not as a marketing line, but as a real process.

Why Fez

Fez has been a center of Moroccan metalwork for centuries. The city's medina is home to generations of artisan families who have passed down engraving and shaping techniques from one generation to the next. Our pieces are made by a partner atelier there, with more than 20 artisans.

Two Metals, Three Finishes

Most of our pieces are solid brass, which Moroccans call yellow copper. Many of them, like our teapots and trays, receive a hand-applied silver finish. Our cooking pots and a few decor pieces are red copper, which is pure copper. Every product page says which metal and which finish you are buying.

What "Handcrafted" Means for Us

When we say a piece is handcrafted, we mean:

  • An artisan individually shapes and engraves each piece
  • No two pieces come out perfectly identical, small natural variations are part of the process
  • The engraving patterns are done by hand, not machine-stamped

This also means production takes time, and it's part of why handmade metalwork costs more than mass-produced alternatives.

Living With Copper and Brass

Natural copper and brass change with use. Left alone, they develop a patina over time, a gradual darkening that many people find gives each piece more character. If you prefer to keep them bright, a light polish keeps the shine.

Silver-finish pieces are different: clean them only with a soft cloth and a little soapy water, without lemon, salt or polish. Our care guide explains each case.

What We're Working On

We're a small, growing brand, and we're honest about that. We're continuously improving our product photography, our website, and how we tell this story, including getting more real photos from our partner atelier and artisans onto our pages over time.
