Copper or Brass: What Is the Difference for Your Bathroom and Kitchen?
People often mix them up, yet copper and brass are two different metals. Telling them apart helps you choose the right piece for each room of your home.
Red copper: the pure metal
Copper is a natural metal with a pinkish orange color. It conducts heat very well, which is why it has been used for centuries in the kitchen: tajines, pots and pans. Over time it develops a darker patina that many people love.
Brass: yellow copper
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It has a golden yellow color, it is harder and it resists everyday knocks better. In Morocco it is often called "yellow copper". It is the ideal metal for bathroom accessories and engraved decorative objects.
How to tell them apart
- Color: pinkish orange for copper, golden yellow for brass.
- Hardness: brass scratches less easily.
- Aging: copper darkens and browns, brass dulls slightly but stays golden.
Which one for your bathroom?
For a bright, warm result, yellow brass is the most common choice. Red copper brings a rarer, warmer touch. Our Signature set comes in several finishes to suit your interior.
Which one for your kitchen?
Red copper is the traditional metal of tajines and pots, thanks to how it conducts heat. If you plan to cook in a copper piece, always check the inside of the piece (tinned or stainless lining) and follow the usage advice for that item. For decoration and serving (trays, decorative objects), brass is perfect.
The craftsmanship of Fez
In Fez, artisans have worked both metals for generations: hammering, engraving, chiseling. At Cuivra, each piece is made by hand in a partner workshop of more than 20 craftsmen.
